March Meltdown Madness
March Madness got off to an early start as University of Michigan Women's Basketball Coach Kevin Borseth lost it Thursday night after the Wolverines blew an 18 point lead against the Wisconsin Badgers. I happened to watch the early part of the game on the Big Ten network on my JetBlue flight back from Florida. BTW's JetBlue TV's rule! If you haven't seen the video, it's kind of sad but shows the passion that makes college sports special.
I can unfortunately relate to Coach Borseth's passion. My beloved Orangemen were leading by 11 points, 75-64, late in the game before losing to Pittsburgh 82-77 on Saturday at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. I didn't have a meltdown like Coach Borseth as I was trying to stay steady in my chair at the barber shop. The barber accidentally cut my face as he was shaving my goatee. He never cut me before, perhaps he watched Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Anyway, my "Color Me Bad" looking goatee is thankfully intact after light bleeding. Let's hope the Orangemen can stop the bleeding and make the Dance with wins over Seton Hall and Marquette and make at least the semi-finals of the Big East Tournament at the Garden.

Take One for the Team
"Take one for the team" is a line from one of the greatest movies ever, Major League. Brady Clark did his part on Saturday for the Mets. Clark was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. This scored the winning run in the Mets first win in Spring Training, 1-0, that I watched a few minutes ago on the WB11.
The game also marked a reunion of former Yankees, Willie Randolph for the Mets and Joe Torre and Don Mattingly for the Dodgers.
On the injury front, Church and Anderson collided in the outfield and both were taken to the hospital for precautionary MRIs. Speaking of MRIs, Delgado's hip is being evaluated in the City. MRIs are not fun. I had one last summer after I tore my left calf. My doctor was afraid that it was a stress fracture but it thankfully was "only" the tear. With lots of blood, sweat, prayers, and tears, I ran the NYC Marathon last November thank God. I hope and pray that Church, Anderson, and Delgado get better soon.

A-Rod Tries to Hit #500 and Be Like Robert Redford in The Natural
A-Rod is going for 500 home runs in the Tank's latest visit to the Stadium Friday night against the Kansas City Royals. He has been stuck at 499 home runs since July 25. A family sitting near me hopes that A-Rod hits #500 to them.

He grounded out in his first attempt so they'll have to wait a while longer.
Cano hit a solo shot with two out in the second inning to right field. Yankees 1 - Royals 0. Royals tied it at 1 in the top of the third.
Jeter walked with two outs in the third. A-Rod doesn't hit a home run in his second at bat but he doubles and Jeter advances to third. Matsui grounds out to first to end the third. Duncan singled to center. Cano also singled to center. Phillips' bunt advances the runners to second and third. Molina hits a sacrifice fly to left field. Duncan tags third and goes home. Yankees retake the lead 2-1. Damon hits a ground rule double to third. Cano scores and the Yankees lead 3-1. Cabrera grounds out to short to end the inning. At the end of four, Yankees lead 3-1.
The natives are getting restless in the fifth as A-Rod is walked with one out.
Dotel gets the hook after he walked Cano on four pitches to start the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Braun relieves him. Philips singles to left. Molina bunt goes to the pitcher who throws to third to force out Cano. Damon walks to load the bases. Cabrera's hit goes off Braun's foot into the stands. It is scored a double and the Yankees take a 5-1 lead. Jeter is walked and the bases are loaded for A-Rod. A-Rod flies out to right but Damon tags and scores. The Yankees lead 6-1. Matsui flies out to end the sixth.
After the leadoff man got on in the eighth, Wang is pulled but gets a standing ovation as he walks off the field. Wang threw 98 pitches giving up one run on seven hits in 7+ innings. Myers and Vizcaino finished the inning. I am pictured below with some Taiwanese fans after the game celebrating Wang's win.

Molina grounded out. Damon got on first on an error. Cabrera singles. Jeter hits to second and KC tries to turn two but the ball is wild. As A-Rod comes to the plate with two outs in the eighth, storm clouds roll in, the rain returns to the Boogie Down Bronx as it poured before the game, and the thunder crashes. Will A-Rod hit his 500th home run off the top of the stadium lights as Redford did in "The Natural"?
The remaining crowd rises to its feet to cheer him on. "The Natural" theme song goes in my head. Others around me start making the same reference. As the crowd grows to a fever pitch, A-Rod flies out to right to end the eighthgame. Darn it! But Mariano came in the top of the ninth to get some work in and to insure the Yankees 7-1 victory.

Coping With the Yankees 7 Game Losing Streak
The Tank had two strikes against him Friday night. I had a ticket to the Red Sox - Yankees game but couldn't go because I was working late on a Windows XP migration at work. (Strike 1). Strike 2 was the fact that the Yankees lost their fourth straight to the Red Sox and seventh straight overall in this very young season. Instead of drowning my tears in beer, I decided to squeeze in a workout at the gym and catch the end of the painful 11-4 defeat to the Red Sox and the late, late movie. It just wasn't any movie, it was none other than "Blades of Glory" starring Will Ferrell as Chaz Michael Michaels and Jon Heder as Jimmy. Chaz and Jimmy make an unlikely comeback as former banned singles figure skating champions who join forces to compete as the first ever same sex figure skating pair. It made me, albeit for a brief time, LMAO and forget the Yankees problems. Since I was in the movies, I had to shut off the ringer which was a good thing because I didn't have to hear Robert in Tampa and/or Medford Bob call and vent about the Yankees pitching. Robert in Tampa and Medford Bob are great friends but I can only afford one sports related emotional breakdown per calendar year. I wish I was Yankee GM Brian Cashman to try to fix the Yankees problems but am not so please stop calling late at night because I need to sleep, not much, but sometime. Being the Tank is a 24 hour job and I not only write about sports, but I live and breathe them. It's to the point that my friend PG calls me "24" like Jack Bauer on "24", the best show on TV, because I don't sleep much.
Back to the movie. It had a number of priceless lines like Chaz's "I skate to one song and one song only, My Humps, by the Black Eyed Peas." There were also too many funny scenes and lines to blog. If you haven't seen it, please do so. It's just what the doctor ordered.
As for the Yankees, please continue to pray for them as I book a flight to Houston to beg Roger Clemens to pitch for us ASAP. Posted by an increasingly desperate Tank in NY.

Rangers Thrash the Thrashers
"No Retreat, No Surrender!" from the movie "300" boomed from Garden speakers on Tuesday evening.
But, first, I walked from work in Columbus Circle through Times Square where there was a double-decker bus. I didn't get a good photo of the front or side of the bus as I was trying to scalp tickets off of the passengers while they were stopped at a stoplight. However, I think the following photo captures the festive mood of Times Square with the Rangers bus pulling away on the right, the Naked Cowboy on the lower left, and a bunch of tourists and billboards.

I kept walking down to the Garden and scalped a ticket nearby. As I entered the Garden, I was honored to meet Joey Salvia and Don LaGreca from the Michael Kay show on 1050 ESPN AM radio. Michael was broadcasting live from Yankee Stadium.

My scalped ticket was thankfully legit (touch wood) and I was psyched to enter the Garden.
Retired FDNY fireman Daniel Rodriguez sang a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Well done Daniel!

"This is where we hold them, this is where we fight!" again from "300" amplified from the speakers and the crowd roared with approval. The puck is dropped and away we go.
Even before I could warm my thumbs up to start typing on my Blackberry, Nylander scored 32 seconds into the game. Nylander was assisted by Jagr and Malik. The crowd roars. Rangers 1 - Thrashers 0.
The Rangers controlled the tempo early pressuring the Thrashers with repeated rushes in their end. The Rangers and their fans smell blood and the Garden erupts. There is nothing like the Garden Organ, even between than the Yankee Organ because of the kick arse acoustics of the Garden.
At 9:45 of the first period, Nylander scored again assisted by Hossa and Jagr. Forget blood, this ice rink could down as a shark tank. (Pun intended!) Rangers 2 - Thrashers 0.
The Tank thought the crowd was chanting "A-oooo!" as in "300" but it was Avery who was penalized two minutes for checking and de Vries from the Thrashers for checking. On a related note, if the players slammed their sticks perpendicularly into the ice like battle spears into the ground as in "300", the crowd would have shouted "A-ooooo!"
The Thrashers tried to counter attack but Lundqvist swatted a chest high shot like a fly on an elephant. Get outta here! Fughedaboutit!
Moments later at 12:26 of the first period, Malik scored assisted by Nylander and Jagr. Forget blood, call the coroner! Rangers 3 - Thrashers 0.
The Rangers domination continued with Pock diquing and passing the puck around his opponent like a pylon cone in a drill.
A Jagrmeister shout erupts behind me! Another drunk guy behind me almost jinxes the Rangers but I warn him before its too late.
During a timeout, the crowd goes crazy when Jeff Beukeboom shows his 1994 Stanley Cup ring to the crowd.
Back to the action, Lundqvist stops Brad Larsenon a breakaway. Sweet! Lundqvist is standing on his head.
The "Potvin Sucks" cheer rings out. I turn to Michelle and tell her that it never gets old. "Nope," she replies.
At the end of the first period, Rangers 3 - Thrashers 0. The Rangers out shot the Thrasher 13 to 7.
In between periods, it was great catching up with friend and former boss John, John's son Tom, and friend and former co-worker Rich.
As I got back late to my seat, the Thrashers were penalized for two minutes for Two Many Men on the ice at 4:05. The Thrashers must really be getting desperate.
Thanks to Michelle for the heads-up on the penalty as I was late getting back to my seat. Michelle and her sister Christine are season ticket holders pictured below.

Callahan assisted by Avery and Tyutin at 6:27. Rangers 4 - Thrashers 0. I am running out of adjectives.
The crowd applauds as "Bobby" from the Sopranos is shown on the screen.
Lundqvist stones a direct on shot and continues to put on a clinic. To present in the series, the Rangers have out shot the Thrashers 98 to 70 according to the screen.
Michael Lombardi from "Rescue Me" is shown on the screen.
Callahan assisted by Mara and Avery at 2:39. Rangers 5 - Thrashers 0. Katrina and the Waves "Walkin' on Sunshine" should be renamed "Skatin' on Sunshine".
ACDC's "Thunderstruck" blares as Cara Buono from the Sopranos is show on the screen.
At the end of the second period, Rangers 5 - Thrashers 0.
In the spirit of each time, the sisters Christine and Michelle were to my right and a father and his son, Gary and Adam, were to my left. Adam missed the first goal because of train delays. Adam cried many a crocodile tear as his sister couldn't make the first or second round of the playoffs. If the Rangers go deeper, I wouldn't want to reconcile that potential family feud.
The Rangers almost a shorthanded goal. Wow!
There was a fight at 3:51, just as John predicted during intermission.
The infamous Atlanta Brave Tomahawk chant is used against the Thrashers. Time to dance to "Yeah!" Fan favorite Dancing Larry gets the crowd going as the spotlight shines on him.
At 8:58, Shanahan scores a power play goal assisted by Cullen and Pock. Rangers 6 - Thrashers 0.
"Henri" chant as the Thrashers are called for off sides at 11:51.
"Hit the road jack" plays overhead as two Thrasher fans are showed on the main screen.
Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" rings out. "Good times never been so good.". Well done Neil. That song was written for tonight and the night that the Tank saw Neil at the Garden on Saturday, August 20, 2005. If you haven't seen Neil live, you should and you're in for a treat.
Hats in the ring for Nylander's hat trick. Wooooo!!!! Rangers 7 - Thrashers 0. The Rangers 35 have out shot the Thrashers 35 - 21.
"Henri!" Chants ring out and gets a standing ovation.
The crowd stands for the last 1:30. The rally towels are waving. The crowd's cheers reach a fever pitch as the final seconds tick off. The horn goes off and the Rangers beat Atlanta 7-0. It was a victory of historic proportions as I heard Don LaGreca checking the record books back to 1932. I lost the radio signal in the towers exiting the Garden but I think it's safe to say there hasn't been a victory like this in quite some time. The Rangers lead the series 3 games to none.
The Rangers raise their sticks to thank the crowd and the gratitude is returned many fold to them.
The three Stars of the Game are third star Henri Lundqvist #3 with 21 saves, second star is Ryan Callahan, and first star is the man with the hat trick, Michael Nylander.
In the post-game ringside interview, Al Trautwig says the Rangers win by a touchdown, 7-0. As a karmic coincidence, the Yankees and Mets also won their games by touchdown, 10-3 and 8-1, over the Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Phillies, respectively.
Let's go Rangers, Yankees, and Mets!

Medford Bob Says
Guest blogger Medford Bob went to the movies recently. Without further ado, Medford Bob Says
Nipples and Sixpacks
Went to see “300” at the Imax at Lincoln Center last night. Always love to go there as it feels like being a kid a the movies for the first time when everything is sooo big and loud. I had seen the film before on its first weekend and wanted to see it in gimongous form so this time I was really able to watch the film itself. It is hilarious. The only line in the film that runs true is when Dominic West rails at the Spartan council “We don’t need a history lesson here”. True dat. I had to bite my tongue to stop giggling at David Wenham doing his best Snidely Whiplash narration at the beginning and the end, (especially when vamping in front of 40,000 Greek soldiers which included 10,000 Spartans. ) railing against “mysticism and tyranny” (why not horticulture and Armageddon? Or macaroni and cheese) while the guys in the second row are asking “what did he say?”. Really, the intro for this turkey should have been by Sherman and Peabody. Lets make it easy though and look at what was historically right here. There was a Sparta, there was a king named Leonides and a place named Thermopolis, there were Persians and their king was Xerxes and, there was a Greece. And everybody had nipples. So, we have history taken care of. Now we can get on with the film. I was wondering what they did with all the outtakes from Lord of the Rings. Was it just me or did the Immortals look like orks? And when they couldn’t beat the Spartans, what did they do? They turned Mongo loose! And this guy was tough! (even though he looked like one of the party crashers in “Weird Science”) Stab him in the arm, just a scratch. Stick him in the eye, “I’m not dead yet”. You gotta chop off his head. Explain this one to me. Conservatively speaking, half a million troops, over a thousand warships, and they can only afford ONE combat rhino? And I haven’t seen elephants that clumsy since the first Fantasia. And when you ask a Spartan what his occupation is, the answer is “Woo Woo Woo”. The last guy to use that line in a film was Curly Joe Howard! Visually, it was great. Best cape work I’ve seen since “Spawn”. And who knew there was gainful employment for lepers? You could become a priest of the oracle and spend your days licking drunken teenage nymphets. Sweet. Trying to discuss the holes in this film afterward with a couple of women was like trying to have a female explain to you that there was no plot in Hallie Berry’s “Catwoman”. You just can’t make the connection. All in all, a great time and definitely worth the trip. And the best part is, you can buy it on DVD and just crank heavy metal music. Might make more sense.
Kudos to Heather Mills on Dancing with the Stars. Best hip hop number I’ve seen in years. And congrats to the NIT for the WVU/Clemson final. One of the most exciting zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………………………..

Ultimate Fighting Championship 66 - Liddell versus Ortiz 2
In keeping with the fighting spirit of recent posts, my friend PG (from the Knicks-Nuggets game) invited me over to his buddy Mike's place on the Upper West Side for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 66 Saturday night. UFC 66 features the Light Heavyweight Championship, featuring a rematch between champion Chuck "The Ice Man" Liddell and Tito Ortiz. The Light Heavyweight division is for fighters 205 pounds and below.
Ultimate Fighting is often misunderstood as barbaric free-for-alls and is banned in many states, including New York. After watching WWE wrestling on Monday night's on Spike TV a few years ago, the Tank was first exposed to the Ultimate Fighting reality show where contestants competed for the right to be the next "Ultimate Fighter". Like every other "reality show", the contestants lived in this unbelievably nice mansion that no regular person, much less an aspiring fighter would live in. Anyway, enough Hollywood. Ultimate Fighting is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) where fighters from different fighting backgrounds (wrestling, boxing, jiu-jitsu, karate, judo, etc.) compete in a high Octagon in three five minute rounds except for the champion fight which is five rounds. MMA appeals to the Tank because it's great to see a wrestler compete against a boxer or a martial artist and vis-versa. Some fighters try to grapple (wrestle) on the ground while others try to fight standing up. Which fight style is the best? Regardless of which style or fighter is the best, these are incredible athletes.
During the 2005 Great Wall Marathon in China, the Tank met Gary from Vegas who trains UFC athletes. Gary finished the Boston Marathon in about 2 hours 12 minutes about 23 years ago. Both Gary and the athletes he trains are well conditioned. Like Amateur Female Jello Wrestling which is real as witnessed and blogged by the Tank, UFC has made inroads because professional wrestling is scripted, boxing is still a mess but getting better and UFC is in not as violent as P.R.I.D.E. in Japan (super ouch and even bloodier) or Muay Thai (take your life into your own hands stepping into the ring). UFC has rules and is regulated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Before we get to the main event, there are several good under cards including (1) Andre "The Pit Bull" Arlovski of Belarus and now residing in Chicago. Arlovski uses a mouthguard shaped as fangs to get a psychological advantage on his opponent. It works and Arlovski beats Marcio Cruz.
In between bouts, the camera pans to Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi sitting at ringside as Agassi has a home in Vegas. Steffi looks scared.
Other noteable matches include (2) Jason "The Athlete" MacDonald of Canada beating Chris Leben by putting him in a guillotine hold. Chris Leben couldn't tap out. Leben is very candid in his post match commentary. Question: "How do you feel?" Answer: Unprintable. More celebrity sightings include actor Chris Angel and musician Kid Rock. (3) "The Dean of Mean" Keith Jardine TKOed Forrest Griffin. I felt bad for Griffin who fought a good fight and was crying after the fight. He said he'll be back. Good luck! (4) Thiago "The PitBull" Alves of Brazil (now Florida) beats Tony DeSouza of Peru. His shirt says "I am not a grappler. I am not a striker. I am both." (5) The main event features Chuck "The Ice Man" Liddell versus Tito Ortiz versus Chuck Liddell. They are former friends and training partners. PG informs me that Ortiz is dating actress Jenna Jameson. As Rod Stewart sings, "Some guys have all the luck". Ortiz comes out with a two sided Mexican and American flag to one of Eminem's hits. Ortiz is psyched while Liddell is relaxed. Bruce Buffer, brother of boxing announcer Michael "Let's Get Ready To Rumble" Buffer, is the UFC announcer. PG predicts an Ortiz win to setup Ortiz-Liddell 3. Ortiz submission versus Liddell. The online voting leading up to the event ends 51-49 in favor of Liddell. It is scheduled for five, 5 minute rounds. They size each other up but Liddell quickly gets down to business as causes Ortiz to bleed over his right eye. Liddell is defining the territory of the Octagon well and limiting Ortiz's movement. Liddell knocks Ortiz down toward the end of the first round and the ref should have the called the match. However, the first round is scored 10-9 in favor of Liddell. Ortiz kept the points close because he connected and scored on body kicks. To start the second round, the crowd cheers "Chuck" for Liddell. Ortiz connects on some body kicks but Liddell counters with punches. Ortiz shoots for Liddell's legs but he is too far out to get him on the mat. Ortiz tries again and succeeds in getting Liddell unto the mat. Liddell somehow gets out of the hold and off the mat. Unbelievable! Commentator Eddie Bravo scored Round 2 10-9 in favor of Ortiz because he scored on the leg kicks. Therefore, the fight is even on the card as we enter Round 3. Ortiz gets knocked down but Liddell waves him up. Liddell then puts together overhand and underhand combinations to win by TKO in 3:59 of the third round. PG, Mike, Drago, Gary, and The Tank celebrate Liddell's victory. In unique upstart and cool fashion, Liddell announces that his after party is at "Studio 54" in Vegas. Liddell also promotes the upcoming " 300" movie which the Tank is looking forward to March 2007. Ortiz thanks everyone including the troops serving overseas. His after party is at Jag in Vegas. How many boxers or wrestlers announce their after parties on air?
Until next time, this is the Tank reporting UFC 66 from Mike's place on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. Keep fighting the good fight inside and outside the ring in 2007. Happy and Healthy New Year to all!

Getting Off The Canvas
Steve and The Tank took a few punches to the chin this past week.
(1) Barry Zito signing with the Giants was a huge blow to Steve and I had to talk him off the ledge again. It was a huge shock to the Tank because Zito signed much earlier than he thought he would. However, Super Mega Sports Agent Scott Boras played the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Mariners, and anyone else he could have found against each other to get the Giants to offer him the richest contract for a pitcher ever.
(2) The Tank was knocked to the canvas once again as he lost someone he cares deeply about. No, it wasn't President Ford who was historically important but the Tank lost someone even more special and important. Steve returned the favor and talked me off the ledge. To quote the Philadelphia Poet Rocky Balboa, "It's not how hard you've been hit by life, it's how hard you hit back!" After some blood, sweat, and tears like in Rocky, Steve and the Tank cheered each other up and accomplished a great deal this week. For instance, Steve did a great job upgrading the website. The Tank has been fighting the good fight against YouTube's copyright department after they pulled our global exclusive Knicks-Nuggets video from inside Madison Square Garden. I can't divulge all the details at the present time but the Tank is fighting for equal treatment under the law while others with less intellectual property standing show their videos freely without harrassment.
To quote the great country signer Toby Keith, we were sucker punched this past week. Steve And The Tank have gotten off the canvas, answered the bell, and will keep fighting for you in 2007 and beyond. "Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8!"

Rocky Balboa
The Tank's old college buddy, Dino The Greek, sent him a welcome surprise e-mail about the opening night of the sixth installment of "Rocky" this past Wednesday, December 20.
------
"Rocky Balboa AKA Rocky VI----phenomenal!!!!!
The ending was good. This movie ended the sequel on a high note. Thank God Sylvester Stallone made this movie or else the series would have ended on Rocky V.
The Theater was packed. People clapped screamed and cheered during the fight and clapped at the end of the movie. The ending was not predictable but if you are a diehard fan of the Rocky movies it would have made sense. Without spoiling the movie, contrary to rumors-Rocky did not die in this movie after the fight. Sylvester Stallone made this movie for the diehard fan of Rocky movies. Original music, fight match scene, training scene. Same type of beginning except and thank God for this they did not do a replay of what happened during the previous movie because Rocky V did not have much.
If you are a Rocky fan this is a must."
------
The Tank Reflects on Dino's Review: I usually don't see movies opening weekend but Dino's review compelled me to watch it. I wrote notes but won't ruin it for you. As clips from previous movies showed, I reflected on priceless memories of watching previous "Rocky" installments with friends and family. Probably the most memorable was my then 11 year old brother and I (12 at the time) cheering on the Hulkster as "Thunderlips" in "Rocky II". This is the only time I didn't cheer for Rocky. The 17 year old usher tried to keep us quiet but we glared at him and he took his flashlight and quickly retreated to the back of the theater.
The magic of the "Rocky" movies is to fight back when you feel down and out. To quote the Philadelphia Poet, "It's not how hard you've been hit by life, it's how hard you hit back!"
