  • Jets versus Giants

The Jets and Gaints are scheduled to meet tonight at the New Meadowlands Stadium which I previewed yesterday

Revis is still holding out.  Both teams starters will play briefly but intensely, especially in the first football game at the New Meadowlands Stadium.  It won’t be the same at Revis is still holding out.

  • Steve and The Tank start tweeting on the Day Favre retires again

I recently setup a Twitter account after much encouragement from Steve.  I tweeted an introductory tweet yesterday and one about Brett Favre today

This will allow us to give shorter but more to the minute updates.  Don’t worry, we’ll still have the hard hitting sports analysis and “Tank it to the Bank with The Tank” predictions you have come to expect.

  • Revis stays at home on his own island

Darrelle Revis was a no show at the opening of the Jets training camp at SUNY Cortland on Sunday.  I don’t blame Revis for trying to get paid especially given Leon Washington’s injury last season and the upcoming possible work stoppage in 2011.

The Tank’s Bottom Line: If the Jets want to go to the Super Bowl, they need to give Revis what he wants.  Hey, it’s an uncapped year.  Everything is going to change next year anyway.

  • Why “Hard Knocks” is bad news for the Jets?

NFL training camps are now opening.  The Jets start their at SUNY Cortland.  The Jets are this seasons featured teams on HBO’s “Hard Knocks”.  It’s good TV but I think it is bad for teamwork.  I think guys will try to be TV stars when they should be focusing on football and teamwork.

The Bengals are the only team to star on “Hard Knocks” and make the playoffs.  “Hard Knocks” also gives other teams a chance to scout the Jets.  If the Patriots illegally scouted the Rams before the Super Bowl, you know they will have SUNY Cortland bugged to the hilt and try to get info from HBO.

As for real football news, the Jets re-signed Coles.

Congratulations to the Giants David Tyree for retiring a Giant on Friday!  He made one of the greatest catches of all time to beat the Patriots.

  • Football Divas Unite

Wide receivers Chad Ocho Cinco and Terrell Owens united yesterday in Cincinnati.  After he left the Bills, TO had been the subject of a few free agent rumors including the Rams but the Bengals came in and signed him.

This is a marriage for football writers as Ocho Cinco and TO are very quotable.  It will be a soap opera in Cincinnati.  I don’t mind as I think sports is sometimes too corporate.  Cincy will be a better team.  If they can get off to a fast start before Big Ben comes back from suspension for the Steelers, the Bengals can repeat as AFC North champs.

  • Will Revis get his “respect”?

Darrelle Revis is angling for a re-negotiated contract from the Jets.  He deserves to be the highest paid defensive back in the NFL.  He needs to be careful.  Rex Ryan has his back all the way to saying he should be the highest paid defensive back.  Rex is the first coach who I can remember saying this.

The Tank’s Bottom Line: In light of Leon Washington’s injury last year, Revis has to get paid but not overplay his hand in the hand.  Have his agent do his job and get this done quickly and quietly.

  • Super Bowl XLVIII coming to NYC

New York / New Jersey was awarded Super Bowl XLVIII yesterday at the NFL Owners Meeting.  The new Meadowlands Stadium will host the event.  I was at a Lacrosse Exhibition in the first event there last month.  It was cool there in early April so February should be COLD for the first outdoor Super Bowl in cold weather.  But hey, that’s how the game is supposed to be played.  And, it’s a great shot in the arm for the local economy.

  • L.T. = Legal Trouble

LT used to stand for Lawrence Taylor, the Giants Hall of Fame Linebacker.  LT now stands for Legal Trouble.  Taylor stands accused of having sex with a 16 year old minor.  Like everyone else in our legal system, Taylor is innocent until proven guilty.  But, if he is found guilty, prosecutors should throw the book at him.

  • Irish eyes weren't smiling on Day 1 of the NFL Draft

All 32 teams passed over Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen on Thursday night of the first day of the NFL Draft.  And, Texas QB Colt McCoy was also passed over.  What happened?

I like Tim Tebow but surprised that he was drafted ahead of Clausen and McCoy.  Tebow is athletic but didn't take snaps under center at Florida.  His throwing motion needs to be improved.  Denver Coach Josh McDaniels thinks he can improve Tebow.  That's a big gamble.  I think Tebow should learn the offense and be part of the wildcat for his rookie season.

Round 1 raised some eyebrows for the local teams.  I am surprised that the Bills chose Clemson RB C.J. Stiller.  I thought they should have chosen Clausen who has played in the cold or even McCoy or possibly Tebow.  Stiller helps the Bills as a running back who can catch the ball out of the backfield as well as return kicks.

The Jets secondary got better as they drafted Boise State CB Kyle Wilson.  This will give the Jets the opportunity to play nickel more, blitz, and cover slot receivers better.

The Giants drafted DL Jason Pierre Paul who is an incredible athlete who has done 13 back flips in a row.  Osi thinks his days are numbered and he is probably right.

The Lambs selected Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford as the first pick in the draft.  (The "Lambs" are better known as the Rams but a St. Louis buddy calls them the "Lambs" because they are ripe for the slaughter by other teams.  I guess last season's 1-15 would count as lamb like.)  That's a big gamble as Bradford was injured in the third game of the season.
