• Tiger must come clean now

Tiger Woods is the best golfer in the world, if not of all time.  I watched Jack Nicklaus as a boy and Tiger is good as they come though he still has to win four more majors to tie Nicklaus.

He was involved in a traffic accident this past weekend at his Orlando home.  Many details are known about his wrecked Cadillac Escalade, his unconscious state, and his wife breaking the windows to pull him out.

I'll leave the rumors about his alleged affair to other news outlets.  SATT focuses on facts, not gossip.

One thing is not gossip that Tiger has stone walled the Florida Highway Patrol on the cause of the accident for three days.  No one is above the law, neither is Tiger.

  • Abe Pollin, R.I.P.

The basketball and hockey worlds lost a friend, Abe Pollin, on Tuesday.  He was 85 years old.  Mr. Pollin was special for me because the Bullets were the first NBA team I rooted for.  Their 1978 Championship was awesome.  This victory video is pretty cool as people celebrated and President Carter dribbling the basketball.

I never met Mr. Pollin during the year I lived in DC in the mid 1990s.  But, the Bullets held a special place in my heart as I met Kevin Grevey from the 1978 team at his restaurant in suburban Fairfax Virginia in 1995.  Kevin owned a restaurant that showed Bills games.  It was a home away from home.  During a halftime, some fellow Bills fans and I painted B I L L S across our bodies for a local TV commercial.  Good times.

Mr. Pollin also owned the NHL’s Washington Capitols.  Mr. Pollin will be missed.

  • College Football Week #13

     Week #12 Review: I was 0-1.  I am 11-4 on the season.

This Week’s Fearless Picks: Thanksgiving weekend has become another great rivalry weekend in college football.  But, there is only one game where both rivals are ranked.

No. 21 Utah loses at No. 19 Brigham Young

Take a break from your Holiday Shopping to check out these games which I won’t predict because both teams aren’t ranked.

No. 2 Alabama at Auburn  I am rooting for the Tide but Auburn is out to play spoiler to Bama’s National Championship hopes.

No. 9 Pittsburgh at West Virginia  Pitt Coach Dave Wannstedt got screwed after Ricky Williams quit on the Dolphins.  He came back home to Pittsburgh and brought the program back to prominence.  SATT Buddy Mark May is somewhere smiling.  West Virginia will give the Panthers everything they can handle in the Backyard Brawl.

Florida State at No. 1 Florida  This game has lost its luster with Florida State’s decline.  But, Bobby Bowden and the Seminoles aren’t going down without a fight.

  • 16 point win helps the Orangemen jump 15 spots in the polls

Syracuse was ranked #24 going into its game against the defending champion and #4 North Carolina in Friday’s finale of the Coaches Versus Cancer at the Garden.  Syracuse took an early lead and it gave us (Steve and The Tank, Editor in Chief and Perma Guest Outlaw Jack and his girlfriend Michelle) some hope at a Union Square bar.

It was great catching up with Kathleen, Kal, Ashley, Cyrus, Rosa, and Bill earlier in the evening for dinner and Johnny Versace afterwards.  A great reunion was made better when the Orangemen went on a 22-1 run at the beginning of the second half enroute to a 87-71 win.

The Orangemen jumped 15 spots to become #9 in the polls.  As we left the bar, Jack noticed that the Empire State Building was orange and blue.  Steve theorized that it was affirmative action in favor of the Mets.  I thought it was in honor the Orangemen winning the Coaches Versus Cancer tournament.  Jack researched the issue and found it was in honor of the 125th Anniversary of the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club.  Congratulations to the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club and the Orangemen!

  • Mauer is the AL MVP

Twins catcher Joe Mauer won the AL MVP on Monday.  He was a deserving candidate.  I would have liked to seen Jeter win it but he split the Yankee vote with Teixeira.

Mauer is an all around good guy and is going into the last year of his contract.  Since he is a home town guy, I expect him to stay with the Twins.  The Twins don’t want to take a chance with free agency and will try to renew his contract now.  If the Twins are smart, they are rip up his current contract and ask Mauer to fill in the blanks.  Don’t feel sorry for the Twins, the Pohlad family are billionaires ($3.1 billion) and 114th on the Forbes list.  Pohlad was always too cheap to spend the money.  Guess who is paying for the new Twins stadium opening in 2010?  The taxpayers.  (Yes, NYC taxpayers paid some of the new Yankee and Met stadiums but not like the Twins.)  Time for Pohlad’s heirs to cough up the money for Mauer before the Yankees and Red Sox battle over him next year.

  • Winning and losing on the Razor’s Edge

The NFL isn’t a beauty pageant and no points are given for runners up.  In an era of parity, teams fight for every inch, every yard, every win.  This was no more evident than yesterday.  The Giants had a big lead against the Falcons but almost gave the game away.  The Giants were lucky to win in the overtime 34-31.  The Bills had a lead but gave it away in the fourth quarter 18-15.  The Browns let the Lions win 38-37 in the last few seconds.

The Jets weren’t as lucky.  They fell behind early at the Patriots 24-0 in the first half.  A late first half blocked punt returned for a touchdown made the game respectable.  The Patriots never lost control and won 31-14.  The Jets have lost 6 of their last 7 and are almost eliminated from playoff contention baring a miracle and lots of help.  The Jets are more like a 6-4 team instead of a 4-6 team.  But, they are going through growing pains.  Becoming a champion is never easy.  Let’s see if the Jets, Bills, and other teams learn from their loses.

  • Instant Video Replays Now!

I beat the drum non-stop for video review during the MLB playoffs.  The incompetence of the MLB umpires was trumped this past week by the referees of the Ireland-France World Cup playoff match.

French star Thierry Henry used his hand to pass the ball to a teammate to score and tie the match.  As a result, France advanced to the World Cup and Ireland stayed home.  It was so egregious that Henry advocates a replay of the match.

MLB had the sense to use review A-Rod’s home run in Game 3 and got the call right.  What if they didn’t review the call and the Phillies won the game?  God forbid.  Multiple that rage by an entire country, Ireland, not being able to go to the best sports tournament in the world, the World Cup.

Can and should you review all plays in soccer or other sports?  No, but goals can and should be reviewable as with the case with Henry.  Also, computer sensors can be used to review if the ball crosses the goal line.  Add the replay time to stoppage time.  It’s time for soccer to get with the program like baseball, basketball, hockey, football, and other sports.

  • College Football Week #12 Picks

Week #11 Review: I was 2-0 and 11-3 on the season.

This Week’s Fearless Picks: This is usually a great rivalry weekend in college football.  But, there is only one game where both rivals are ranked.

No. 25 California loses at No. 17 Stanford.

Ohio State is ranked but Michigan isn’t this weekend.  This game has slipped in a short period of time since it was a game for the ages in 2006.

Most importantly, R.I.P. Stefanie Spielman.  She was the wife of Ohio State, Bills, and Lions linebacker Chris Spielman who died of cancer.
