After losing to Georgetown on Thursday, I was concerned that Syracuse might lose its #1 seed. The NCAA Selection Committee looked at Syracuse’s body of work and awarded it the #1 seed in the West Region. Syracuse only has 4 losses and they were to quality in conference teams.
There has been lots of talk about expanding the tournament to include on the bubble teams. Bubble teams are usually quality teams from power conferences like the Big East who just miss the cut. If I were in charge, I would do so in one of the following ways:
(1) If you can have one play in game, why not four? This will give on the bubble teams like Illinois and Virginia Tech a chance to dance. Do you think #16 Winthrop is more deserving than those or other teams? Me neither.
(2) Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim wants to expand the tournament to 96 teams. I would do so if you fold the 32 team NIT into the NCAA which it now controls.
Speaking of Syracuse, the Wall Street Journal gave it some grudging respect in a recent article. In the so called dynasties the article mentioned, UNC, Indiana, and UCLA did NOT make the tournament. BTW, I do think Kansas and Kentucky are the truest of the dynasties because they have stood the test of time.
More on my bracket picks before Thursday, probably Wednesday. Let’s Go Orange!
